Artist’s Information – Martin Clarke

Martin is a sound artist, recordist and filmmaker from the Shetland Isles, resident in the West Midlands since 2003. Working exclusively in the domain of electroacoustic sound and abstract video, his works are concerned with the use of real-world sounds and images to create non-representational shapes and spaces; works presented in concert in the UK, Europe and Canada - video works screened in Birmingham, Warsaw and Hollywood.

a short film about stillness (2004)

An investigation into sound/image relationships, movement - contrasting still images with dynamic soundscapes. Presented at 7 inch cinema, Birmingham, UK, (Nov 2004); Jutro Filmu (Future of Film) Warsaw, Poland, (April 2005) and Hollyshorts Short Film Festival, Hollywood CA. (August 2005).

stranger things happen at sea (2004)

A short electroacoustic piece, using the sounds of waves as a structuring process – the dynamic shape of the wave was applied to and combined with various other environmental and abstract sounds including roller-coasters from Tivoli gardens in Copenhagen. Presented in Birmingham at the CBSO centre (March 2004); realtime/non-reatime, festival of interactive music, Basel, Switzerland; Aix-En-Muisque, Aix-En-Provence, France, (June 2005); Sonorities2004, international electronic music festival, Belfast, (April 2004).

study in space (2005)

A work for environmental recordings - presented in stereo. Recordings: ice, from the Shetland Isles; Bullring Market sellers; abstract recordings from Birmingham’s eastside, using contact microphones. Presented in Birmingham at Vivid and in Montréal at the Rencontre Musique festival of electroacoustic music (May 2005).

monument (2005)

A short film, filmed in Montréal, about being a tourist: about taking the time and making the effort to wander around, looking at objects. Presented at Flatpack Film Festival, Birmingham (January 2006).
